Signs Of A Happy Dog – The Tell TAIL Signs

Girl playing with her pet dog.

Every dog’s unique. Sure, there are similarities among breeds but we’re talking about their distinct personalities! You know, those silly quirks that make Rover…Rover. Ask any pet owner what sets their dog apart and they’re sure to rattle off at least two or three specific things.

So with such different personalities – how can you tell if your pup is happy? Well, the good news is this: most dogs display their happiness in similar ways! Phew…

Knowing the signs of a happy dog is important because it can help you communicate and connect with your pup on a deeper level. And that’s why we’re here for it! Afterall, whose day wasn’t made better by a happy dog?

We’re here to share nine signs of a happy dog. Keep reading to learn them all!

    Smiles

How could we possibly talk about dog happiness without discussing those cheesy dog grins? Dogs appear to smile with their mouths open and the corners turned up. Ever notice how they seem to smile when you smile? A happy dog will show some of their teeth but never in an aggressive way. Combine that smile with your pup’s precious eyes gazing back at you, and you’re sure to melt.

Eye contact in a non-aggressive way is a sign of trust. Your dog watches you because they care about you.

    Tail Wags

Ah, the tail wag. Tail wagging is almost always a sign of a happy dog! Chances are your little guy wags his tail when it’s time to eat, when you first arrive home, and countless times in-between.

Then, of course, there’s that fit of dog happiness that causes their whole bodies to wiggle. Isn’t it just the greatest thing ever?

    A Good Appetite

That’s right, when your dog plows through another bag of dog food, you may have reason to smile. Of course, every dog’s appetite is different and you’ll want to be careful to avoid obesity by feeding them proper amounts, but a happy and healthy dog usually likes to eat. Excitement over mealtime is usually a good thing.

If you notice that their appetite seems to have decreased, it may be time to try a different kind of dog food, or visit the vet. A decrease in appetite could indicate tummy troubles or health conditions.

    Good Behavior

When a dog acts out by destroying furniture or finds other creative ways to make a mess, boredom or anxiety may be to blame. When a dog’s stimulated and happy about life, they usually don’t go looking for trouble.

    Rolling On Their Back

Happy dogs love to show off their bellies by either asking for a belly rub or happily rolling in the grass and sunshine. A happy dog may also like to show off their tongue.

    Play Bow

When a dog lowers its chest but keeps its tail in the air, this is known as a bow. Chances are  they’re wanting to play! A good sign of a happy dog is one who wants to play. So go ahead and throw that ball. Most dogs love to play fetch!

Waits For You To Catch Up

Now this one’s more of a sign that your dog is happy with you, but a sign nonetheless. This is when your dog gets excited running down the trail but stops to make sure you’re coming too. It’s one of the best signs of dog happiness. Why best? Because it makes dog owners feel the love too!

    Comes When You Call

A happy dog wants to please you. They want to follow directions and receive praise for it.  If your dog comes running when you call them, they’re probably a happy pup. Of course, there are exceptions! If your dog’s devouring bits of their birthday cake, they may not be as quick to respond to your call. But who can blame ‘em?

    Invitations To Play

This may look like a playful bark or bow. Or maybe your dog drops their favorite toy down at your feet. All of these behaviors are invitations to play and we think you’ll agree – they smell an awful lot like happiness. So go ahead and play. It’s good for both of you.

Where Does Dog Happiness Come From?

The main reason a dog is happy is because of trust. If your dog trusts that you’ll always take care of them and treat them kindly, they’ll love you for it. Dogs are just like that. They want to feel love and happiness. Fortunately, it doesn’t take much to give them that because of course you want to love them back. You want to make them happy the same way they make you happy.

One of the best ways to foster dog happiness is by keeping your dog healthy. When a dog feels good physically, they’ll feel better mentally.

Two of the best ways to keep your dog healthy are giving them lots of exercise and quality treats and dog food. Take them outside and get them playing as much as you can. This movement is just as good for your health as it is theirs. Having a dog can help keep you and your family active.
